What is the Difference Between a Gunsmith and a Gun Shop?

The shortest answer is, a gunsmith troubleshoots, repairs and modifies firearms, gun shops sell firearms, parts and supplies. Some gun shops employ gunsmiths, but as good gunsmith’s become more rare, (literally dying off), it’s harder and harder to find a good one.

Some gunsmiths specialize, only working on Colt, Winchester, or revolvers, shotguns, etc. Here at Indian Valley Gunsmithing (IVG), Dean works on all types and brands of firearms, foreign and domestic. He spends some time fixing firearms that were “repaired” at other shops, but still don’t function properly. IVG receives firearms by appointment, and through shipment. We try to keep turnaround time less than a week. Exceptions are for hard-to-find parts or extensive work required jobs. Rush jobs are available, with additional cost.

Dean’s formal training began in the Military, he continues to do coursework in varying specialties. Because firearms are his passion, he spends a lot of time researching and learning about different firearms and how they work.
