From the Gunsmith, Cleaning Part 1

Hope that everyone’s year is going well and that hunting season has been successful.
One of the things that we are asked is if we clean guns. Yes… we clean guns. From a simple field strip clean to a deep clean to removal of cosmoline from storage (you wouldn’t believe how difficult this can actually be sometimes 😂) we clean guns.
Sometimes it’s a matter of just a straightforward clean, the customer has done their job. Sometimes they have had so much fun that the gun has been forgotten and it’s a bit more involved. And sometimes there are broken parts involved with the cleaning that you only find when you go deeper. And like anything mechanical, when something breaks it can, and often does take something else with it.
I have found over the years, especially from being in the military, that an ounce of prevention is literally worth ten pounds of cure when it comes to firearms. That highly polished Browning that goes out into the field with you can come back with carbon, dirt/filth, moisture, etc. that finds its way into every crack and crevasse and begins its job of turning your prized possession into just another “beater.”
We can’t work miracles but we can help you keep it looking good and in service for many more years if you do your part too. Many firearms just are not “user friendly” for full disassembly and deep cleaning, BARs and the pump and semi auto Remington’s come to immediate mind for examples but there are also many others. That’s where we can help. Give us a call, set up an appointment and bring them in… we will be happy to help you.
More on cleaning shortly…
