MN vs CA Sierra Snow

Until our first snow here in Minnesota, I thought the snow on “Game of Thrones” (GOT), was staged.

Now I know better. Snow here in MN is so much different than the snow I experienced in California. Snow in the Sierra’s is nicknamed ‘Sierra Cement’ because it’s wet, heavy, can fall 8+ feet overnight and is very cold. In Minnesota, it has to be above 25 or so to snow, so when it’s snowing, it seems relatively warm. Especially compared to the negative degree temperatures compounded by bitter, cold, prairie winds.

We awoke this morning to a couple of inches of snow and 32 degrees with no wind. The dogs love to play in the snow, and we enjoyed the warmer temps. In CA, the dogs would be wet an miserable within minutes, here the snow is so dry, it crunches when you walk on it. They play outside as long as they like here.

Having been here longer than a minute, we’ve all learned to enjoy this time of year. Like the Stark’s on GOT, we know real winter is coming.

Minnesota weather has definitely taught us to “seize the day”, where all types of weather are concerned. If it’s warm, with little wind, head for the lake for boating and fishing, or to the range for shooting, or if it’s evening, light a bonfire. It’s all about being outdoors here!

The bitter cold season has it’s uses as well. Indoor projects can get done, and since there’s little shooting, the Gunsmith is busy with customer gun cleanings, modifications, and projects.
