Hope that everyone had a great summer. Hunting season is almost upon us and it’s time to get the guns out and get them ready for another season. What follows will be old news for most of us but with all the new gun owners out there I thought this might be important to cover. With ammo still hard to acquire it’s going to be tougher to do but sight in with what you’re going to hunt with, i.e. manufacturer, bullet type, grain weight, etc… keep it all the same. If you can, buy the same lot number, when buying multiple boxes. Lot numbers are usually ink stamped on the outside of the box or inside an end flap. This will help accuracy consistency.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been asked why does my gun shoot so bad or not hit the target after I sight in? My first question is, “what ammo have you been using?” I have had folks bring me their ammo, and sometimes it’s a mix of headstamps and grain weight from various makers and has even been different handloads. This is always a problem.
Also a problem, is to sight in with let’s say 150 gr. full metal jacket then hunting with 150 gr. soft point… 99% of the time they are going to shoot differently. I have seen a 6” point of impact difference out of the same rifle with the aforementioned ammunition example.
