I’ve Got A Pistol and Ammo, Now What?

Here in the Midwest, gun and ammo purchasing is far easier than in California. The Gunsmith has customers that bought guns they know nothing about, even caliber or ammo type it shoots. Just bought it. I realize not everyone has their own personal Gunsmith, but wow.

Buying a gun you know nothing about is much like buying a car just sitting on the side of a road without starting it or driving it. You may score, or you may have a dud that needs more parts and work than it’s worth to get it usable. Buying from a reputable dealer is advised in both situations.

But now that you have your firearm and ammo, what’s next? The short answer is practice, train, and practice more. Train with someone truly knowledgeable and professional, practice all you can. We joined a local gun club so we could use the nice, clean, private range, and we do our duty to help keep it that way.

The NRA has good online courses. Warning, they will beg you for money through every avenue you give them. I took the online pistol course as part of my instructor training and it is good for the basics and getting familiar with your pistol. There are also courses for shotgun and rifle.

There are books on Amazon that are excellent, look for highly rated books that have a lot of reviews. Reading and online courses are only to build your knowledge, training and practice are what builds your confidence and makes you good.

Once you’re familiar with your weapon, take a course. Or, if it’s offered, take the course before buying and rent guns from the instructor to try. Learn local laws and regulations and ask your instructor what they offer, if you feel the need for more training.
