Gunsmith, Can you fix it?

Hi there…
Good morning… hope that everyone is doing well. One of the things that I’m asked is if I can “fix it”.  Sounds like a simple question, and it is for the most part, but… As in life there are always gray areas and gunsmithing is no exception. There is a difference between “parts changers” and gunsmiths. Good gunsmiths fix things.

Right now, repair parts are getting more difficult to find for a number of reasons. Being able to buy new parts is always the best, followed by good used parts (when you can find them), which helps to keep costs down. Sometimes, you can no longer buy the parts for an out of production gun and have to take repairs to the next level.

Having the skills and equipment to properly repair worn parts (which I do) is the next step, if replacement parts can’t be found. In addition, repairs are more expensive and, of course, take more time. Then there is the manufacture of a new replacement, or custom made part, always more difficult, time consuming and expensive (which I also do) but sometimes it’s the only way to get the job done.

We can do all of these operations here, including heat treat, so let us know if you have a project that we can help you with. It’s always best if you bring or ship the whole gun so a more accurate price can be quoted. Sometimes research is required, so it might need to stay for a day or two.

As always, stay safe, happy shooting and we will see you again…
Dean
