Current Gun Legislations Effect on Gun Owners

A number of folks in our new business area have asked me what I think about current laws being passed in Washington.
From my perspective, after living and running a firearms business in California with their crazy rules and regulations, we are in trouble. The bills being pushed through right now federally will completely change how gun businesses operate all over the country.
Extending waiting period time, from 3 days to 10, isn’t going to do anything other than make it tougher for law abiding citizens to acquire firearms. A new “assault weapon” ban won’t do anything more than the old law, which by the governments own admission, “did nothing measurable.”
In order to buy a gun in California, you have to present a valid picture I.D., a second government issued I.D., a utility bill with a physical address, to verify residence, a verification of firearms proficiency training, and after everything was cleared through the State DOJ, receive a safe handling demonstration, and a ream of paperwork.
The California Government made gun purchases as difficult as the law would allow. Because the Government is in control, they do what they want.
Don’t get me started on all the permits and licenses that California required me and the wife to have and renew each year, in order to do business, and they inspected us every single year.
All firearms transfers had to go through their computer system which was frequently down (another defacto gun control attempt???), and if we made even the smallest paperwork error it was a “hit” and treated the same as a flagrant violation, which is very, very bad.
When I first started back in 1986, the folks at the California state firearms division were great to work with and very helpful. Now, they are pretty much anti gun and if I, as a gun dealer, call them to ask a question I will get three different answers from three different people. Current policy changes are weekly. Living proof that the more the Government tries to control firearms the more difficult it becomes to follow the law, or know what it actually is.
My hope is that cooler heads prevail, but I’m not going to hold my breath. I think this will be going to have to be wrung out in the courts but, I’m not seeing a lot of hope there either, considering the courts failure to protect our freedoms nowadays. Not trying to get everyone down, just trying to convey that more rules aren’t necessarily the answer to a problem because rights once lost, never return. Be safe, happy shooting… till later.
